Social Determinants of Health (SDH) Research Center
Today, an unprecedented opportunity has arisen to eliminate the root causes of diseases and subsequently prevent mortality, especially in poor and vulnerable communities across the world. Moreover, health inequalities as well as majority of human pains and sufferings can be often traced back to social roots (i.e. social determinants of health, SDH). Thus, many health inequalities are being addressed by social inequalities which can by themselves raise the needs for equality and balance among various social groups and populations. At the same time, discovering the ways in which social determinants affect health can provide a basis for the evidence of the development of social and health policies to improve the health status of most deprived and disadvantaged people. In such developed policies, all individuals must be included and no population group or groups must be left out. Over the past decade, scientific information on SDH has dramatically improved, and political conditions are being currently developed for actions more than ever before. Therefore, this opportunity is assumed much more significant than the past ones to be missed. To achieve these goals, there is a need for a management dominating relevant knowledge, while at the same time, having the required ethical and political consciousness. Accordingly, the Commission on Social Determinants of Health was established in the World Health Organization (WHO). Thus, scientific understanding of SDH could witness rapid advances in the 1990s and this scientific evidence was used to formulate new public policy-making approaches in many countries. The Commission on Social Determinants of Health also started collaborations with successful countries endowed with the necessary capabilities in order to implement and promote measures that are targeted by SDH and inequalities in this domain. One of the member states and partners in this field is the Islamic Republic of Iran. The arrangements for this issue launched in 2005 in Iran and then it became more certain as the commissioners of the given program attended the Fourth Meeting on Social Determinants of Health held on January 2005 in the city of Tehran. Based on the 20-Year National Vision of the Islamic Republic of Iran, development plans and other related laws and regulations relying on existing capacities and potentials as well as successful experiences of this country in combating injustice and national strategies of SDH, need to be established on the principles of justice in Iran. The Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education; as the main provider and maintainer of public health services in Iran, aimed at reaching the highest possible level of health for all people, has paid special attention to social issues affecting health as well as the issue of health equity. However, health promotion and elimination of the devastating effects of SDH is a personal, national, and even international responsibility which requires joint efforts of all levels of society including individuals, communities, and the government. Despite its potentials in many domains, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province is one of the less developed provinces in Iran whose main indicators of comprehensive development, social development, and health development are much far from the desirable situation in many areas or lack consistency and stability. The absence of SDH research centers has always been felt as a pressing need. In this regard, following the pursuit by Yasuj University of Medical Sciences and efforts made by the founders, the establishment of SDH Research Center affiliated to Yasuj University of Medical Sciences was approved with reference to the decision made on the 23rd session of the Council on the Accreditation of Universities of Medical Sciences dated on January 11th, 2011 and it was announced to Yasuj University of Medical Sciences by Letter No. 500.789. Following the establishment and consolidation of this Center which undoubtedly has the widest scope of research among other research centers and requires comprehensive attention, initial actions to set up the Center were taken with the efforts and assistance of the Presidency of Yasuj University of Medical Sciences and Vice-Chancellor’s Offices for Research and Support since January 2011 at the School of Health and the given Center launched its activities.
